Hammer and Anvil
Hammer and Anvil is a simple tactic more commonly known as flanking even if that isn’t exactly right. It is the embodiment of the fire and maneuver mindset. This simple tactic relies on setting up a Fire Element or Base of Fire (SBF) and a Maneuver or Flanking Element.
This simple schematic shows, what kind of setup is perfect for properly carrying out this tactic. As it’s probably obvious the supporting element provides fire superiority and suppresses the enemies on target to contain their movement, while the assault element moves to a flanking position and either eliminates an exposed enemy or moves in to eliminate them.
The crucial part of carrying it out is good communication between both elements to avoid friendly fire. To help with that, on bigger targets, the element commander might choose to create fire zones on target. The SBF will then shift fire from zone to zone as the maneuver element moves through the target.
As also visible on the schematic, an SBF shout be set up in a good overwatch position (e.g. a hill) and the maneuver element should stay undetected as long as possible to multiply the effect of surprise.
