Here at Veterans Gaming, it?s our avowed opinion that the family that games together stays together. Co-op has a long and storied history. For most, their first co-op gaming experience was in front of a console, whether that of an arcade cabinet like Double Dragon or an Atari 2600 and the family television. For PC gamers -- the majority of Veterans Gaming aficionados -- co-op has meant anything from shared-keyboard games to LAN parties to playing Quake while battling against both network lag and a distant stranger. So what?s the state of co-op today? The Legacy of Latency When I first started working in the game industry, latency -- or the annoying, disruptive delay that you get when your gaming device is trying to shoehorn too much data through too small of a bandwidth pipe -- was a forbidding obstacle to the dream of online gaming, and to co-op gaming as well. Things have changed dramatically. Modem gamers are nearly extinct, and broadband internet connections are the new standard. Many gamers pursue their hobby wirelessly, playing from coffee shops or public wifi spots as time allows. However, technical limitations still exist even in today?s speedy networked environments. The bandwidth requirements of dynamically-loaded game assets has skyrocketed with the increased resolutions of monitors and TVs and increased sound capabilities of gaming devices. The canny gamer also is aware of the technological limitations in some of the most demanding games. Fighting games, which rely on the most precise timings and control responsiveness, often struggle in their online implementations. Similarly, MMORPGs rarely feature ?twitch? gameplay because of the bandwidth demands of a large world with multiple player characters. Instead, the usual MMORPG gameplay involves directing or sequencing actions of an avatar -- gameplay that does not hinge on instantaneous response. Technological Enhancements Improvements in gaming consoles have converted a great many casual and console gamers into co-op players. The PC?s mouse-and-keyboard control combination now has to compete with more precise wireless controllers, and modern gaming consoles can easily accommodate four players. Consoles with high-definition video output can now display gaming environments in detail comparable to that of a gaming PC, at least to the casual observer. Most importantly, game consoles center their activities around the living room entertainment center, all on one large screen, instead of individual PC workstations. Although there are certainly exceptions, the living room is the typical centerpiece of leisure activity and group interaction, with furniture and audio-visual equipment to match. Co-op Gaming Resources Now that we?ve discussed some of the tech and history, let?s get to the meat of the issue: How can you find the best co-op games for the PC or your favorite console? And how can you figure out what kind of co-op those games offer? After all, playing on separate PCs may not work for you if you don?t want to have to buy multiple copies of the game. And, if you?re a console gamer, you may not be happy with a game that requires each player to be on a separate console.   5. by Fred Stanton As you may know, each spring heralds the arrival of the South by Southwest festival (SxSW) in Austin, Texas, which draws leading lights in the music, film, and interactive (web/handheld/gaming) industries to participate in panels, concerts, and parties. Our man Fred Stanton was on the scene for VETERANS-GAMING. [yt=600,400]0SNnlvjWuYo[/yt] During SxSW, Sony occupied the building across the street from the Austin Convention Center and converted it into "the PlayStation Lounge," a giant gaming-themed club complete with rooftop Jumbotron (broadcasting images of MLB 11, of course), exclusive admittance (SxSW badgeholders only), and complimentary drinks. I took a peek inside when it opened up one evening to see what was up. [yt=600,400]6jt14dJGDtU[/yt] Not much, as it turns out. Scattered throughout the lounge were a dozen huge monitors arranged back-to-back, controllers sitting invitingly in front of them. Most of the twenty game stations were in use. Comfy black sofas lined the walls, and glowing colored cubes served as drink tables. Perhaps like most parties it didn't get hopping until late in the night. (As it turns out, Hollywood stars Rosario Dawson and Brittany Snow were seen at the event during the week. Dawson played InFAMOUS 2 and Snow was seen fragging in Ratchet and Clank and SOCOM 4.) For the moment, I felt like I had the run of the place and all its demos. Sony was featuring Resistance 3, SOCOM 4, Ratchet & Clank All 4 One, and Uncharted 3. [yt=600,400]BsVW10tmj3w[/yt] I may be too much of an old-skool gamer to appreciate the highest of high-tech demos. Sure, it was kinda neat putting on 3D glasses to play MLB 11 and Killzone 3, and it was great fun seeing a number of games whose releases I'd completely missed, but what really warmed my heart was the side-scrolling platformer Shank -- which at over half a year since its release was probably the oldest game in the room. Surrounded as I was by games with fully three-dimensional environments and photorealistic rendering, I found its art and its gameplay strongly appealing simply because it had such style. [yt=600,400]VG08xqvYzjg[/yt] In addition to the aforementioned games, Sony was showing PlayStation Home games Sodium 2 and Novus Prime. In Sodium 2, the player takes on the part of an incompetent futuristic race driver (or, if you're not me, a competent futuristic race driver) who occasionally takes time off from racing to hop in a tank and get blown up. Novus Prime is a multiplayer space combat game in which player teams cooperate in defense of their home space station, the Novus Prime of the title. Still, as I said, the futuristic look of games like these didn't draw my eye nearly as much as the games whose art had a specific style, whether the cartoony art of the aforementioned Shank, or PixelJunk's Shooter 2: Belly of the Beast. There's nothing quite like piloting a tiny craft through the intestinal tract of an inconceivably large monster and having to solve puzzles along the way, like where to take a wash afterward (I'm not kidding -- acid sticks to your craft and you have to find water to wash it off before you dissolve!). With so much to see at SxSW I didn't stick around long, but what I saw convinced me to take a closer look at PlayStation Home. The games are getting numerous -- and good.

  9. Might have to, I can't get into the server for some reason?? Just says something like server load 0 FPS 0 blah 0 blah 0 and never starts the game. Figures.

  13. join us on Teamspeak3 when you're available to fly and that's all man! Everyone's schedule is different, so when you're ready for a flight, just jump into the flight channels on TS3 and then join the server. The connection info is in the TS3 F4AF main channel. The AF Server is running 24/7 you can can play there anytime you like. There are usually dudes flying in there daily so keep a look out! Welcome aboard man.
