Sony Vegas

After trying pretty much everything but Sony Vegas I've finally caved, nothing eats 200-300gb files without issues like Sony Vegas does.
Editing is still a pain but it's doable, but once I encode the project I end up with huge files compared to what I'm used to.

Avidemux - No editing - Eats a 3 hour session in 2-3 hours and average about 2gb in size, perfect quality.
Sony Vegas - Plenty of Ed - Takes about 9 hours for the same footage and end up with silly sized file.

So some recommended presets would be nice, what the same quality I get out of Avidemux & preferably a similar file size.
